Emanuel has been stricken from the list of candidates in the Chicago mayor race. His candidacy was challenged in court on qualification grounds. Initially, his eligibility to run was upheld in a court ruling which was appealed. However, an appeals court judgment overturned that decision. It makes you wonder how many more payday cash loans could be taken out to bring this battle back to the courtroom.
Emanuel ruling excludes him from Chicago mayor run
For the moment, it appears that Rahm Emanuel is out of the competition to be the next Chicago mayor, according to the Chicago Sun Times. Emanuel was found by the Illinois Court of Appeals to not have satisfied residency requirements to run for office. In order to run for this position, Rahm Emanuel left his position as White House Chief of Staff. Current mayor Richard M. Daley will be stepping down. He had been mayor since 1989 though. Legendary Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley was Daley's father while Daley is also brother to William M. Daley who was White House Chief of Staff before Emanuel.
Eligibility requirements see Emanuel out of competition
This is the second trip to court for Rahm Emanuel to keep him in the running for Chicago’s mayor. The Chicago Board of Elections confirmed that Emanuel was eligible in Dec. 2010 while a Cook County judge upheld that in court. The appellate court ruled that Emanuel would be excluded from the ballot after it was appealed. In order to run for a position, a candidate has to have lived in the city for at least one year before election day. This is what the state law states. He obviously was not residing in Chicago as Emanuel had been renting it out to previous mayoral candidate Rob Halpin.
Appeal is very possible
Emanuel might appeal the verdict. However, the attorney who lodged the appeal against Emanuel noted that the justice who delivered the opinion addressed the issue of eligibility so well the Illinois Superior Court might refuse to touch the case. If no appeal is filed, Emanuel will be stricken from the ballot.
