How to reprogram your engine computer

Your engine’s computer needs to be flashed, or reprogrammed after being erased, if you would like your engine control modules (ECM’s) to stay up to date all the time. Microprocessors within the power train and fuel injectors have to have this done if cars are older newer than 1996 since the system won’t work properly otherwise. Your engine does much better when the programming is up to date. Under hood Service explains that this costs between $ 80 and $ 120 at repair shops if you would like it done. If you have the right stuff and are able, you can flash your own car.

Engine computer reprogramming solution

If you want to reprogram your engine computer yourself then you need to be able to find the diagnostic port under the steering wheel inside the car which you’ll attach a special scanner to. The auto manufacturer will replace old software within the car with new programming. It used to be that it was necessary to remove parts in order to complete the reprogramming process, but now all that’s necessary is a computer with an Internet connection, a USB cable and a scanning device that can connect with a car’s diagnostic port. The manufacturer’s website has the new software on it which is flashed onto the ECM.

Flashing an ECM?

Auto repair shops say flashing should be done once each and every few years, and this may be appropriate. However, it is typically only something that needs to be addressed on a need-to basis, unless a sweeping pronouncement is issued by the manufacturer as part of a recall movement. It certainly isn’t really something a car owner should pay for as part of routine car maintenance.

DAY flashers have to do this

It is simple to do usually. See what software updates are on your car manufacturer’s website. Download the update into a flash programming device. Proper engine turning is a concern for some which may require more software. If you’d like to get some more info, then check places like DIYEFI.org. States like California that have tough emissions testing may have special laws outlawing some different aspects of engine programming, so make sure to check with your state’s motor automobile authority first.
