Rod Blagojevich, disgraced Illinois governor, has just had his trial finished. Two weeks of deliberation left the grand jury giving a single guilty verdict out to him. Blagojevich received a count of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Since he gave false statements to the government, five years in prison could be given, although sentencing hasn't happened yet. Federal prosecutors have already announced they fully intend to re-try Blagojevich.
Two weeks before verdict
Because he was trying to sell the seat in the U.S. Senate vacated by Barack Obama on surveillance, Rod Blagojevich got arrested two years ago. He was impeached and removed from office because of this. He was charged to have 24 accusations. Two weeks was enough time for the jury to decide what the verdict was. The judge announced a mistrial on 23 of the 24 accounts and announced the guilty verdict on one count of providing a false statement to the FBI.
U.S. Attorney wants a retrial
The New York Times, reports that a retrial for Blagojevich is wanted by the U.S. Attorney's office. He was nevertheless convicted, after all, of one count of lying to the FBI. A federal crime was committed meaning five years or a $ 250,000 fine could be given to him. Some hope that he can be given both.
Blagojevich as stereotype in Chicago
Chicago, Ill., has a long history of political corruption. George Ryan was removed from office and convicted also, as Rod Blagojevich's previous governor. Ryan was convicted of corruption putting him in federal prison. We have no idea where Rod Blagojevich will be since a second trial may be happening soon. Five years in prison could be where his life goes.
