U.S. authorities advise of risk in Koran fire

Pastor Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Center Church of Gainesville, Fla., is courting scandal with the strategy for he and other church members to set fire to copies of the Koran. Government officials have asked the chapel call it off. Protests have already begun within the Muslim world. General David Petraeus himself called for a stop to the planned fire of the Koran. He has said it will do nothing besides put our service personnel and civilians in greater danger.

Dove World Outreach Center warned

The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, according to the Christian Science Monitor, has asked the chapel to not partake in any Koran burning. The Taliban and Al Qaeda will be the sole beneficiaries, according to General Petraeus, as fire the Koran will only be a propaganda victory for the,. He also cautioned that as a result, it would make winning over Afghans and others worldwide that much more difficult and put American soldiers in greater danger. The Ground Zero Mosque controversy has currently been enough of a strain, and American-Islamic tensions are currently high as it is.

Church to dwell on the repercussions

The Dove World Outreach Center Chapel is weighing the decision to undergo with the burnings. The potential ramifications are on the mind of the members and Pastor Terry Jones, which is why, according to CNN, the members will think it over. Some pause was given to the members by the warning from Gen. David Petraeus, as the members intended to hold an “International Burn the Koran Day” on Sept. 11 of this year. The radical elements of Islam were the intended targets of the protest are the position the chapel has held all along.

Cui bono?

The pastor and his congregation can believe anything they wish, and protest whichever they wish as it is their right. However, Gen. Petraeus is right. This protest, should it be carried out, could be a propaganda victory for extremists.
