On “Desperate Housewives,” Nicollette Sheridan enjoyed playing Edie Britt. For the flirtatious, man-eating Ms. Britt, it was suitable to be voluntarily smacked around in the bedroom. But being smacked around by the producers of the program behind the scenes and terminated without good cause didn’t make for a good day on Wisteria Lane.
According to the New York Times, Nicollette Sheridan is suing the producers of “Desperate Housewives” for assault and wrongful termination, and they may need paydayloans to help with the lawsuit.
Precisely what happened that destroyed Nicollette Sheridan’s character?
Nicollette Sheridan’s lawsuit claims that back in September 2008, Marc Cherry, creator of the popular nighttime soap opera, struck her when Sheridan purportedly asked Cherry about a line in the script. As noted by the Associated Press, Marc Cherry’s alleged response was to take Nicollette Sheridan to the side and “forcefully hit her with his hand across her face and head.”
To complain about Marc Cherry’s alleged violent treatment, Nicollette Sheridan went right to ABC, but it seemed her pleas fell heavily on deaf ears. It was not long after that when Edie Britt was killed off the show. Sheridan has no doubt that it was a retaliation by ABC because she had the nerves to “make a fuss.”
What caused Edie Britt’s death?
It certainly has nothing to do with a lover or lover’s wife or girlfriend seeking revenge. It ended with a patented deadly automobile crash, as Zap2It outlines in the fateful 2009 episode of “Desperate Housewives.” Orson was “running across the street after one of his breaking and entering,” and Edie swerved to keep away from hitting him. Her car struck a utility pole, and downed power lines hit the puddle of water into which Edie’s body had settled. In a real double whammy, collision and electrocution claimed her.
That episode was followed by a flashback episode in which the “Desperate Housewives” remember Nicollette Sheridan’s character. Edie “smacks” some senses into Lynette and Bree in two of the flashbacks, in hopes they can discover the strength to face their own issues. Mrs. McCluskey “smacks” some sense into Travis, Edie’s son, when he discovers her death and appeared barely fazed by it. Mrs. McCluskey “smacks down” Edie for her attempt to sympathize with McCluskey over having lost a son, which was the final smack.
Is all that smacking coincidence?
Considering Nicollette Sheridan’s experience with Marc Cherry, it’s an interesting word choice on the part of Zap2It. It could be argued coincidental, since the episode aired more than likely before the smack down was public knowledge. However, Edie’s death itself was made clear in Gabby’s flashback from the same episode, when Nicollette Sheridan’s character confided that she was going to die before her 50th birthday. How convenient, ABC. We’ll see if Nicollette Sheridan smacks you down, and whether you’ll need short term loans.
